About Tinker's Rule

Measured advice for turning a house into a home.

Tinker’s Rule is a buying guide for people fixing up their homes, written by people who’d rather tell you what’s actually worth it than sell you the most expensive thing in the room.

The name is a small joke we mean sincerely. A tinker’s rule is the folding measuring rule a tradesperson carries: the maker’s measure. A rule is also a standard you can trust. And said out loud, well, tinkers rule. We’re on the side of anyone who picks up a wrench and tries.

How we choose

Our method, laid out as three stations on a measuring rule: compare what's available, name the tradeoffs, show who it's wrong for.

We’re not a lab, and we won’t pretend to be one. What we do is the homework: we compare what’s available room by room, we look at how things actually install and hold up, and we figure out who each option genuinely suits. Then we show that work, because a recommendation you can’t see the reasoning behind is just an opinion with better lighting.

A few rules we hold ourselves to:

The test we hold every claim to: Would the friend who actually did this renovation make this claim, this honestly, and could we show the method behind it? If no, cut it.

How we’re funded, plainly

Tinker’s Rule is reader-supported. When you buy through a link on this site, we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. That’s how we keep the lights on, but it doesn’t decide what we cover or what we recommend. We only point you toward things we’d consider for our own homes, and we surface the tradeoffs honestly when we know them. The full version is on our disclosure page.

Where we’re starting

We’re new, and we’re starting where we can be genuinely useful: the bathroom. It’s the room where small, well-chosen upgrades change daily life the most, and the room where honest guidance is hardest to find under all the noise. We’d rather be right about one room than vague about ten.
